About Us
👋 Hey, we're Starling Quilt Studio – a mother-daughter duo – Linda and Michelle. For years, we dreamed of owning a longarm quilting machine. When Michelle moved back to Metro Detroit, the stars aligned, and we were able to purchase a Gammill Statler. Luck, Fate, or both, it was the perfect opportunity. 🔮⚡️💎
We’ve always loved sewing quilt tops in a variety of styles, sharing ideas, and imagining what’s next together. Now, we’re thrilled to collaborate with you to bring your quilts to life. Using our computerized longarm edge-to-edge pantographs, we transform quilt tops into finished treasures. From wall hangings and charity quilts to cozy bed-size quilts, we enjoy quilting for both ourselves and others.
Right now, we’re focusing on edge-to-edge and semi-custom quilting. This approach helps us keep turnaround times quick and costs affordable so that you can enjoy your finished quilt sooner without compromising on quality.
Whether you’re new to quilting or a seasoned maker, we invite you to bring your quilt top to us and we look forward to collaborating with you to finish your beautiful quilt!

How we work
- We enjoy a collaborative process, or you can let us take the wheel! If you let us decide, we default to medium-density quilting with a neutral or coordinating thread color using a design that complements your quilt top.
- Feel free to let us know how you prefer to be in communication about your quilt throughout the process, be it email or text for pictures and any questions that arise.
- We quilt in the order tops are received. Our average turnaround time is within 2 weeks from the time your work is received to the time it’s ready to be sent your way.
- For those mailing in, we will let you know when we’ve received your quilt and start working on it.
- Payment is due before returning your quilt in person or shipping the quilt back to you.
How to prepare your Quilt Top
We want to ensure your quilt is treated with the utmost care and attention. Here are some guidelines to help you prepare your quilt top for quilting:
- To ensure we provide the best result for you, the backing should be square and have a minimum of 5 extra inches on all sides to allow us to load your quilt top. (Ex. a 60” x 60” quilt top should have a 70” x 70” backing.)
If your backing needs to be pieced, we prefer a horizontal seam. - If your quilt top is directional, please mark the top with either a safety pin or easy-to-remove tape, like painter's tape.
- Please ensure you press your quilt top and backing before sending it in. While we will give it a quick press before loading your quilt to remove wrinkles after you’ve folded it, we don’t have the capacity to give each seam a proper press as you might.
- Remove stray threads as much as possible - we’ll do our best to catch them as much as possible.
